This photo is one of a series showing distinctive types of beach sand from an article by Carla Lagendijk.

The New York Times just published an interesting article on beach sand by their science reporter Cornelia Dean, who is also responsible for the previous post.  It turns out that the sand on Grand Isle can tell a story about its history to those in the know.  One of the folks cited in the story is Jeff Williams, a USGS expert on Louisiana barrier beaches, who works out of Woods Hole, Massachusetts.
