Levee Costs vs. Standards

The New Orleans Times Picayune published an editorial today that chides members of the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) for suggesting that affordable but substandard levees should be considered when the high cost of certified levees would preclude or delay any flood protection (http://blog.nola.com/editorials/2008/11/dont_erode_levee_standards.html).

This discussion about expedience and pragmatism underscores the relevance of the levee articles linked below.  The enormous cost of traditional earthen levees suggests that discussions on levee design should be open to radical ideas and hybrid design concepts – including the incorporation of woody vegetation under certain circumstances to reduce the size and cost of levees.
